Influencer marketing is big business. Social media influencers can command tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for individual posts promoting a brand or product. Smaller influencers, who may have as few as a thousand followers, are also in high demand to reach niche audiences and secure broader message saturation.
But influencer advertising is still advertising to which the deceptive marketing practices provisions of the Competition Act apply.
This panel will explore trends in online advertising and the influencer advertising economy, the role of Canada’s deceptive marketing practices laws in influencer advertising, and steps businesses and influencers can take to ensure compliance.
