OBA International Law PROGRAM | Original Program Date: September 28, 2018
Over the last few years, the Canadian domestic trade landscape has undergone major changes impacting a wide range of areas including reductions of regulatory barriers and changes to public procurement access. The recently enacted Canadian Free Trade Agreement (“CFTA”) replaced the Agreement on Internal Trade (“AIT”) on July 1, 2017. The CFTA is a comprehensive free trade agreement governing most aspects of trade between Canadian provinces and territories, such as trade in goods, services, investment, labour mobility, and procurement. It was designed to align with Canada’s international trade obligations, including Canada’s commitments under the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
Join the OBA International Law Section and expert panelists from the private bar and the Ministry of International Trade (Ontario) to learn how the transition from the AIT to the CFTA may impact your clients’ opportunities for growth, and the need to follow new compliance requirements. Our panelists will discuss the application of key provisions of the CFTA to your clients’ business, the link between the CETA and international trade agreements and dispute settlement, and how the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision in R. v. Comeau, 2018 SCC 15 may impact the CFTA’s legal interpretation and domestic trade issues.
