OBA Insolvency Law PROGRAM | Original Program Date: October 2, 2018
This program is also part of the 2018-2019 Insolvency Law Package Series. Click here for more information and the discount of the packaged series.
Join us for this unique series where past winners of the OBA Murray Klein Award discuss precedent-setting cases in which they were involved, or new concepts and practices in Canadian insolvency and restructuring law where they were at the forefront. This award recognizes Ontario insolvency and restructuring lawyers for their integrity, decency and selflessness in their approach to professional practice. Each panel in this not-to-be-missed series will also consider how concepts introduced in years past have evolved.
Part 1 of the Series:
Growth of the Commercial List
The Zuber Report of the Ontario Courts Inquiry of 1987 noted that bankruptcy cases were examples of cases of unusual technicality, and a field in which many judges and practitioners had little or no experience. The report recommended that bankruptcy matters be assigned to a small number of judges experienced in that field and the Commercial List was created in Toronto in 1991 as a result. Join us as we discuss milestones in the development of the Commercial List over the last nearly 30 years, highlighting key projects undertaken in that time.
Speaker: Tony Reyes, Norton Rose Fullbright Canada LLP – OBA Murray Klein Award Winner 2016
In the Matter of Danier Leather, and Other Creative Applications of Insolvency Law
This panel will also discuss the insolvency proceedings of Danier Leather which started as a BIA proposal, turned into a bankruptcy, and then incorporated a receivership facilitating substantial distributions to shareholders, as well as other helpful uses of insolvency law demonstrating its flexibility.
