OBA Foundation Debate | 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM
“BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S SETTLEMENT OF THE OMAR KHADR LAWSUIT, WHEREBY IT PAID HIM $10.5 MILLION AND OFFERED AN APOLOGY, WAS FAIR AND REASONABLE.”
In a unanimous January 2010 decision, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the involvement of Canadian officials in Mr. Khadr’s interrogations at Guantanamo clearly violated his rights under the Charter. This summer, the Federal Government settled Mr. Khadr’s civil lawsuit. Some members of the public and the legal community were outraged by the fact of the settlement and its terms.
This year’s Foundation Debate will examine the appropriateness of the settlement.
Join lawyers James Morton and Rachel Curran as they debate this timely question, including the implications of the settlement on future cases of this nature.
Proposition:
James Morton,
lawyer, of the Bars of Ontario and Nunavut
Opposition:
Rachel Curran,
lawyer, Sr Associate with Harper & Associates Consulting, CBC Political & Public Policy Commentator, and Director of Policy to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Moderator: Jennifer Hollett, Award-winning TV Journalist and public policy lecturer
The event is open to the legal community and the general public. Admission is free, but you must register with the OBA in advance as space is limited.
