health law | Original Program Date: November 1, 2016

It has been almost five months since Bill C-14 received royal assent and the Criminal Code was amended to allow for medically assisted dying. Join us as we hear from Dr. Trudo Lemmens on the current situation health care providers face in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Carter, Bill C-14 and the new Criminal Code amendments. The new legal framework will be outlined and ethical considerations will be discussed with an eye to understanding how the new legal landscape impacts health care providers and the legal practitioners that advise them.

Join us at this insightful program to examine:

  • The Carter decision – What did the Supreme Court actually decide?
  • Bill C-14 and the new Criminal Code amendments, their application, ongoing discussions (including Advanced Directives and patients with psychiatric illnesses) and issues that may arise
  • Ethical considerations and professionalism dilemmas for lawyers advising heath care professionals and patients
  • Lessons to consider from other jurisdictions, particularly Belgium and the Netherlands
  • What legal and professional challenges the future might hold
