From Accommodation to Integration:
Sex and Gender Diversity in Public Institutions
Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Conference and Constitutional, Civil Liberties & Human Rights | Original Program Date: June 3, 2014
In February 2014, social media and news sources buzzed with the story of Avery Edison, a transgender woman placed in a prison for men after being apprehended at Pearson airport. The incident brought the issue of equality and accommodation for trans* individuals to the forefront. Join us for this critical discussion on the experience of trans*people in schools, shelters, prisons, and other public institutions. Learn from our expert panel as they unravel the issues of sex and gender diversity, including:
- How have X.Y. v. Ontario and the inclusion of “gender identity” and “gender expression” as prohibited grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code impacted this issue?
- Exploring the new Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Policy on Preventing Discrimination Because of Gender Identity and Gender Expression
- What is being done by public institutions to recognize and improve the experience of trans* people?
- Best practices for accommodating trans* individuals in the public sector
- What are the obligations of public sector lawyers in accommodating trans* individuals?
- Best practices for counsel representing trans* people in the context of disputes with public institutions
*Use of “trans” includes transsexual, transgender, two-spirit, non-binary, intersex etc.
