In the last couple years, the metaverse has evolved from being a niche concept into a ubiquitous topic. While some were skeptical and preferred to observe from the sidelines, many companies began offering virtual counterparts to their real-world products and services for use by avatars in the metaverse. The emergence of virtual offerings also generated novel questions about how to protect and enforce trademark rights in the metaverse, and how those strategies might differ from conventional frameworks applicable to physical goods and services in the real world.

Although some of the initial hype may have quieted down, the metaverse and protection of virtual goods and services still remains a highly relevant topic. Meanwhile, recent court and trademark office decisions have now provided at least some initial insight regarding the protection and enforcement of trademarks in the metaverse. This presentation will discuss the current state of the metaverse and trademark protection, enforcement, and licensing considerations for virtual goods and services.

Our speakers are Lawyers from the US firm Pierce Atwood and Toronto-based IP specialists Bereskin & Parr, respectively.  Please join Kasey Boucher Pierter and Prudence Etkin as they focus on Trade-marks and virtual products in the virtual metaverse world both from a US and a Canadian perspective.
