Indigenous governments have the authority to design their governing institutions so that these institutions reflect the diverse traditions, needs and preferences of their nations. This conference will explore the varying approaches and perspectives to developing and implementing Indigenous government structures.
Yukon provides a relevant, interesting and beautiful location to discuss these issues. In Yukon, the majority of First Nations have Final Land Claim Agreements and Self-Government Agreements. Nationally, self-government, co-governance and Indigenous laws are being advanced by First Nations, leading to significant developments in the law.
Conference panels will profile best practices and emerging initiatives in Indigenous governance, along with case law and legislative updates in this area. Themes which will be explored in depth by the panels include First Nation legislation, fiscal relations, models for shared decision making, environmental assessment and administration of justice.
The conference will be held in the stunning Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre situated in downtown Whitehorse on the Yukon River.
