CBA LAW SERIES
Assisted Reproductive Technology: Wide Implications for Canadian Lawyers
April 18, 2017
Webinar presented by the National Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Community Forum, the National Family Law Section, the National Health Law Section, and the National Wills, Estates and Trusts Law Section of the CBA
Experts estimate one in eight Canadian couples experiences infertility. Increasingly, these Canadians (as well as single parents and queer families) are turning to assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
This webinar will provide a cross-country overview of the state of the law surrounding ART. It will also examine professional ethics considerations when advising clients from equity-seeking communities.
Our speakers will discuss many of the implications of recent and coming changes to the law surrounding ART, including:
- How parentage is determined across Canada
- The Canada-wide impact of recent Ontario changes to the rules of legal parentage, surrogacy, and to the recognition of parentage agreements
- Upcoming changes to the federal Assisted Human Reproduction Act aimed at providing clarity on reimbursable expenses in surrogacy arrangements
- Wills and estates issues arising from the use of reproductive technology
- How assisted reproduction bears on family law and health law
