The Canadian Competition Bureau (the "Bureau") has successfully executed on many of the priorities and objectives set out in its 2017-18 Annual Plan: Competition is Key, in which the Bureau committed to continue its work to foster the conditions for innovation in Canada, particularly in the digital economy.  The Bureau remained vigilant in its ongoing enforcement of cases in the digital economy in 2017 and its experience in completed investigations against Google, Apple, Amazon and others informed conclusions reached in a white paper released in September 2017 titled Big data and Innovation: Implications for competition policy in Canada.  In 2017, the Bureau also published a final report concerning technology-led innovation in the Canadian financial services sector outlining barriers to the growth and adoption of FinTech in Canada and providing a number of recommendations to help regulators and policymakers continue to promote FinTech innovation.

The recent achievements of the Bureau in matters related to IP and technology will be highlighted and the importance of the Bureau's work to the promotion of a balanced effects-based approach to competition enforcement will be discussed, demonstrating that case-specific application of current analytical frameworks remain effective in the digital economy.
