Synopsis
Retirement on Trial is a compelling documentary about Stephen Herman, a senior civil litigation lawyer who sets out on a quest to navigate the uncharted waters of retirement. With a burning desire to prepare himself and his colleagues for the psychological and emotional shift that awaits, he offers seminars to explore the challenge of this transition. He is met with reluctance from his colleagues, leaving him discouraged. From his frustration, he undertakes a new path, giving birth to this captivating film.
Through intimate reflections from legal professionals from the US, Canada, Guyana, and Israel, a neurosurgeon and social philosopher, the film challenges the often “feared and maligned” transition of retirement and its relationship to the process of aging. The film offers soulful reflections on how “retiring” can be a process rather than a final destination. Can a film about the deadly subject of retirement be funny? Following this 48-minute group screening, there will be a live discussion where attendees can ask questions to
Stephen Herman, the participatory filmmaker,
Marvin Stern, Criminal Lawyer, and
Martin Griffith-Zahner, Criminal and Civil Lawyer, who were interviewed in this documentary.
