Unmasking the Risks of AI Facial Recognition Technology in the Canadian Immigration System
We are witnessing the increasing adoption of AI Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in the Canadian immigration system, from its use in refugee status revocation to its current application in tracking individuals on Canada’s deportation list. This growing reliance on AI-driven FRT brings a host of challenges and risks. While such technology is presented as a tool to enhance national security and efficiency, its implementation raises critical concerns regarding civil liberties, transparency and accountability. This session will examine the current use of AI-FRT by Canadian immigration authorities, analyzing its immediate and long-term implications. It will also explore the broader societal and ethical ramifications of embedding facial recognition technology into Canada’s immigration and border enforcement practices.
