The CBA Competition Law and Foreign Investment Review Section’s Deceptive Marketing Committee and the Litigation Committee present:

Straight from the Box Office: Perspectives on the Cineplex Decision

December 10, 2024 | 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Eastern
Online (Zoom)

In September 2024, the Competition Tribunal ordered Cineplex to pay a $38.9 million penalty for engaging in deceptive marketing through drip pricing. Using a range of perspectives, including a private practitioner, an academic with a research agenda focused on consumer behaviour, and counsel from the Competition Bureau’s Legal Services, this panel will dissect the recent Competition Tribunal decision in Cineplex regarding deceptive marketing and drip pricing practices under the Competition Act.

The panel will discuss the Tribunal’s reasoning and the potential implications of the decision on pricing transparency in Canadian markets, the research on consumer expectations surrounding such pricing strategies, and the potential compliance challenges this decision may pose for companies in Canada.

Moderator

Sarah Mavula, Baker McKenzie
