Whether you know you want to be a health lawyer or are just curious, join us for an interactive mentoring session with a panel of health lawyers from across the country. This is a great opportunity to learn about the different types of practices within health law, and to hear tips on how to pursue a career in the area. The program will include the opportunity to meet with each lawyer in a small group setting, to answer all your questions.

Tory formerly practiced medical defence litigation. She is currently transitioning into administrative law practice, specializing in health law.

Annie is a Partner in Miller Thomson’s Administrative Law group, with a focus in health and privacy. After starting out at a large national firm in Calgary she worked as a Crown Prosecutor in Fort McMurray before joining Miller Thomson in 2018.

Nimisha Dubey, Legal Counsel, Sunnybrook Hospital
Nimisha specializes in corporate and health law at Sunnybrook Hospital, where she negotiates and manages pre-clinical and clinical research agreements in the interest of Sunnybrook and most importantly, its patients so that they can gain access to the cutting-edge therapeutics. Nimisha is currently dedicated to all COVID-19 research projects and is establishing a legal framework to support a nation-wide critical care platform trial.

Patrick Hawkins, Partner, Health Law Group, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Toronto, Ontario
Patrick is a civil litigator, specializing in health law and personal injury defence. For the past 29 years, he has devoted much of his practice to representing hospitals and other healthcare facilities in professional malpractice litigation and a wide variety of other litigation and policy matters. He acts as general counsel and provides situational advice to health care providers on a wide range of issues including privacy, freedom of information, quality of care reviews, adverse event management and disclosure, and physician credentialing.

In-house Legal Counsel with Eastern Health providing legal services to Eastern Health’s Medical Services department. Medical Services is responsible for the recruitment, administration, and disciplinary processes under the Medical Staff Bylaws of Eastern Health’s physician group.

Maya Kotob, Associate Lawyer, Anita Szigeti Advocates
Maya is an associate lawyer at Anita Szigeti Advocates, where she practices in the area of Mental Health Law. She appears regularly before the Consent and Capacity Board and Ontario Review Board and also argues appeals to the Superior Court of Justice and Court of Appeal. Maya studied at University of Manchester, UK, where she completed her Law Degree and her Masters in Healthcare Law and Ethics.

Valerie Wise, Founder and Lawyer, Wise Health Law Professional Corporation
Valerie represents health professionals in proceedings with their regulators (ie., complaints, discipline, registration etc.) or in civil litigation. She has practiced health law in Ontario for over 25 years, and in 2013 founded Wise Health Law – a boutique law firm focused on the representation of professionals and professional associations.
