Many lawyers want to serve on nonprofit boards to develop their leadership skills, to give back to the community in which they live and work, and to use as a springboard to sit on for-profit boards. This webinar will provide the fundamentals of serving on a nonprofit board. It will start with an overview of the Canadian nonprofit sector. It will discuss the concept of nonprofit governance, including the 3 mental maps of governance and the 3 models of board decision-making.  It will provide an overview of the Canadian legal environment in which nonprofits operate. It will cover the 10 responsibilities of a board and the 2 principal duties of board directors. It will also cover the 7 responsibilities of board directors as well as the risks and liabilities that they may face. The webinar concludes with some practical tips on how lawyers can find the right nonprofit board on which to serve.
