CBA Aboriginal Law Conference

Jun. 19-21, 2019
Banff AB

Agenda

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) which speaks to the individual and collective rights of Indigenous Peoples globally, taking into account their specific cultural, identity, religion, language, health, education, economic, and social circumstances.

Bill C-262, a bill to implement UNDRIP, was passed in the House of Commons and is now before the Senate. The message from Indigenous peoples has consistently been the same: take all necessary measures to ensure that the laws of Canada are consistent with UNDRIP and consult with Indigenous peoples as to its implementation. The Interpretation of UNDRIP is highly contested and is of interest to Indigenous Peoples, Government, and Industry.

The conference will include Plenary Sessions and smaller concurrent sessions for group discussion. Themes which will be explored in depth by the panels include UNDRIP and Canada’s Constitutional Framework, a framework for reconciliation versus a public relations scheme, Free, Prior and Informed Consent, Lands, Resources and UNDRIP, and UNDRIP and the rise of International Human Rights.
