SYNOPSIS

Person-centred justice includes meeting people and populations where they are – literally! In rural and remote locations, access to a professional who can provide situation-specific legal information and advice can be difficult to come by and often leads to the development, continuation and exacerbation of legal and law related problems. Based on their outreach and understanding of local needs, two organizations have taken a mobile approach in different geographies and communities.

Join this session to hear first hand about the creation and impact of the WellCoMs Mobile Van initiative in Guelph and Wellington County, Ontario, and the Making Waves initiative in and around Bella Coola, BC.

About Ab Currie, Ph. D.
Ab Currie, Ph.D. (Sociology, University of Toronto) is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice where he is mainly involved in research on various topics related to the everyday legal problems experienced by the public. He is also presently conducting research with a number of community legal clinics in Ontario on innovations in service delivery based on outreach, and developing people-centered and community-focussed approaches to justice. Prior to joining the Canadian Forum Ab was Principal Researcher at the Department of Justice Canada where he conducted research in legal aid and other areas of access to justice for more than three decades. He has conducted extensive research in criminal and civil legal aid, including unmet need for criminal legal aid and four national legal needs studies in Canada.

About Anne Fletcher
Anne Fletcher lives and works in Bella Coola. She is the founder and legal advocate for the Bella Coola Legal Advocacy Program since 2008. Her work includes referrals, direct Advocacy, as well as Full representation in administrative tribubals. She provides outreach services to the 3 Island and Inlet communities of the mid-coast (Bella Bella, Klemtu and Wuikinuxv), as well as to Anahim Lake in the Western Chilcotin. A common theme through these 15 years has been her focus on the most effective means of travel through these vast territories, connected only by Mountains and deep ocean Fjords.
