SYNOPSIS
Lawyers can sometimes face additional challenges when working with self-represented litigants (SRLs). Whether an SRL misunderstands the law or makes unreasonable demands of opposing counsel or the court, lawyers need the tools to respond effectively and professionally.
Learn from our panelists about your ethical and professional responsibilities and expectations when working with SRLs. Better understand the SRL experience and how to deal with potential inappropriate behaviours while still contributing to a fair and respectful experience.
By the end of this session, you will understand:
- Your ethical and professional responsibilities when it comes to dealing with SRLs
- How to respond effectively to self-represented litigant’s (sometimes) inappropriate behaviour and unreasonable demands
- How the judiciary communicates (and expects counsel to communicate) with self-represented litigants
