OBA Entertainment, Media and Communications Law PROGRAM | Original Program Date: November 30, 2021
Online harassment – particularly on social media, websites, and in comments sections – has become increasingly common in the media and entertainment spheres and beyond. Recently, the CBC released a statement regarding harassment faced by the media organization’s journalists – noting that the worst of the abuse targets women and racialized journalists. This statement comes not long after the Ontario Superior Court of Justice recognized a new tort of online harassment earlier this year. Offline, harassment claims also continue to be an issue before the Courts, with more survivors in the wake of the #MeToo movement coming forward.
Join us for this primer on advancing harassment claims, including a discussion on recent case law developments, and get helpful insights from our expert panel on how to:
- Approach a claim when a prospective client comes to you with allegations of harassment (both online and off);
- Navigate a claim without re-traumatizing the client and account for racial, cultural, and gender-based issues that may arise; and
- Take care of yourself as a practitioner advancing these claims.
Register now for this program to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the new tort of online harassment and how to effectively assist clients seeking redress for harassment (both online and off).
