OBA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM | Original Program Date: February 27, 2020
The Canadian Health Measures Survey indicates that 40% of adults aged 20 to 79 have at least a slight hearing loss in one or both ears. How do you ensure that people who experience hearing loss receive proper access to justice and appropriate legal services when they enter the justice system? To be fully engaged in their files and be able to give informed decisions, both clients and law practitioners with a hearing loss require proper services. Join us for a unique program with an experienced speaker who will discuss the issues and demonstrate the techniques that assist these clients when accessing the justice system. Gain the perspective from someone who experiences hearing loss as to how they benefit from using this technology.
The program will explore and discuss:
- The different types of hearing loss
- Who within the justice system requires proper access
- How this access can be denied or the barriers that exist
- What is the duty to accommodate under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
- The use of the appropriate tools for the client’s specific type of hearing loss and the options that exist
- Various scenarios of accessibility in the courtroom
Learn with an interactive mock discovery how you can effectively use realtime captioning to assist a person who experiences hearing loss.
Don’t miss this unique and highly practical program!
