OBA Women Lawyers Forum PROGRAM | Original Program Date: January 10, 2019
Although associates are the future of private practice, the pathway to success can be different for female and male associates. This panel will focus on the experiences of successful junior, mid and senior-level women associates from various law firms and practice areas, and will showcase the path they are taking to power in private practice.
Join our panelists for an evening of lively and intersectional discussion, touching on burning questions such as:
- What is “fit”? We have all heard that the perfect associate position comes down to “fit”. Our panelists will break down what “fit” really means, how they knew when they found it, and what to do if a firm no longer “fits”.
- What are “normal” performance expectations? Expectations for associate performance and hours vary by firm, practice area, colleagues and a myriad of other factors. Our panelists will describe standard performance expectations for their practice area and will reflect on experiences outside of the norm.
- What skills are key to success? Women who leave private practice typically do so within five years of being called to the bar. Our panelists will share their tips, advice, and the skills that have helped them thrive in private practice.
- What does the path look like? It is never too early to start laying the groundwork to become a partner in a law firm, but how do you do it? Our panelists will address making the decision to stay in private practice, building a business plan, when to start bringing in files, and how to manage your practice in the future.
- How is “success” defined as an associate? Is the old adage “money=success” really true? Our panelists will discuss what “success” means to them, how it has changed over time, and how a new generation of associates is shaping the practice of law for future lawyers.
