Regulation Challenges in a Technological Age
Public Sector Lawyers | Original Program Date: June 16, 2016
It is difficult to escape the Uber debate in the media these days as Toronto and other municipalities grapple with how to regulate the popular app. This contentious issue is a prime example of regulators struggling to keep pace with the inescapable technological advances that have become a constant theme in society today.
It is not just municipalities tackling regulation of taxi (Uber), hotel (Airbnb) and parking (Rover) alternatives. Regulated professions, including the legal profession, are also impacted by technological change, and the Ontario Securities Commission has to manage regulatory implications of emerging tech-based business models, such as crowdfunding. Join us to explore the challenges technology poses for regulators, and what steps they are taking to overcome them.
