Amelia Calbry-Muzyka (they/them) has worked as legal counsel with the Human Rights Law Section (HRLS) - Department of Justice Canada since 2016. Their practice primarily focuses on equality and anti-discrimination law under both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act (CHRA). They also work as policy counsel, advising the Government of Canada on amendments to the CHRA.
Amelia is passionate advocate for the rights of Two Spirit, transgender, non-binary and gender diverse individuals. In their capacity as HRLS counsel, Amelia has worked on numerous related initiatives, including the former Bill C-16 (adding gender identity and expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination under the CHRA) and the Policy Direction to Modernize the Government of Canada’s Sex and Gender Information Practices. In addition, as part of their work with the Department of Justice’s Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, Amelia provides training throughout the federal government on trans inclusivity and access to justice, as well as gender inclusive writing in both English and French.
Amelia holds both an LL.M. with concentration in legislative studies and a JD with concentration in social justice from the University of Ottawa, as well as a Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Jo Cole (they/them) is a Policy Analyst specializing in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Data with the Government of Canada’s Public Service Pride Network. They lead an intergovernmental initiative called “Modernizing Chosen Names and Gender Markers,” which aims to change the way that the government of Canada collects, stores and displays the data of Two-Spirit, transgender, non-binary and gender diverse employees. They are also the chair of the Policy, Outreach, and Action Committee, and co-chair of the Inclusive Washrooms Initiative. As part of their work, Jo also provides training sessions on gender based analysis plus, 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion and EDI.
Jo holds a Master Degree in Public Policy and Administration from Carleton university, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Dalhousie University. Their career spans across several organizations, including Employment and Social Development Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and Rotary International.
