Freedom of Peaceful Assembly in Times of Protest
Join the CBA’s Constitutional and Human Rights Section for a timely discussion on the jurisprudence of freedom of peaceful assembly, one of the Charter’s “forgotten freedoms”. Despite there being relatively little case law on this freedom’s guarantee under section 2(c) of the Charter, the past several years have thrust peaceful assembly back into the spotlight. Featuring leading Canadian civil liberties scholars, this professional development panel will consider the jurisprudential history of section 2(c), the need for doctrinal clarity on what constitutes a “peaceful assembly”, and how the protest movements which have arisen over the past several years have shaped our understanding of this most fundamental of democratic freedoms.
