The 2022 CIPO Townhall will include representatives from CIPO’s Patent Branch, Trademark and Industrial Design Branch, Trademark Opposition Board, Patent Appeal Board and Corporate Strategies and Services Branch. The CIPO speakers will discuss the new 5 year Business Strategy, ongoing initiatives in the different areas, and current service with a panel discussion on current service improvements in intellectual property practice from the CIPO perspective.

The 15^th annual forum on IP litigation reform, hosted by CBA and the Federal Courts, allows members of the bench and bar to engage in an open discussion of possible procedural reform in a “town hall” format.

2020 and 2021 were years in which we, and the Courts, learned to adapt to litigating in the midst of a public pandemic. We anticipate a review of lessons learned and measures to be adopted in a post-pandemic landscape, with remarks from the Honourable Chief Justice Crampton of the Federal Court and the Honourable Justice George Locke of the Federal Court of Appeal, and a lively discussion with and among a panel of seasoned judicial officers from the Federal Court. Topics will range from the precedential value of motions for judgment (when one side is unrepresented), to the use of virtual hearings in a post-COVID world, to increasing the involvement of junior members of the Bar, to the importance of written advocacy.
