Canadian Legal Professionals are not All Right: The National Wellness Study and Recommendations for Change

The October 27, 2022 report on The National Study on the Psychological Health Determinants of Legal Professionals in Canada, paints a worrying picture of the wellness of Canadian legal professionals.

Conducted by a research team at the Université de Sherbrooke, with funding from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada and the Canadian Bar Association, the findings show significantly high levels of psychological distress, depression, anxiety, burnout and suicidal ideation among legal professionals in all areas of practice and from all jurisdictions.

While psychological distress and burnout were reported by more than half of all respondents, the rates were particularly high for professionals living with a disability, articling students, lawyers aged 26-35, legal professionals with less than 10 years of experience, legal professionals identifying as members of LGBTQ2S+ community, and women.

On December 8, the research team will release its recommendations on what needs to be done to support the wellness of legal professionals in Canada.  The CBA has convened a dedicated panel to walk you through the recommendations and their potential impact.

Join us for this important discussion on what needs to change to ensure the health of the profession.
