Defanging the "FANGs" - Why the Focus on Big Tech?
January 29, 2021 | 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Eastern
Online (Zoom)
Big Tech has long been a focus in Europe, where news headlines regularly capture investigations involving the world’s largest technology companies. In that context, it is no surprise that the EU has proposed new rules for digital platforms, which aim to curtail the alleged market power of the world’s digital “gatekeepers”. The U.S. recently entered the fray with the publication of a report on the dominance of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google, and lawsuits against Google and Facebook. In Canada, while the Competition Bureau has investigated Google as early as 2013, and recently publicized its investigation into Amazon, there has been minimal enforcement involving the “FANGs” (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google). Against this backdrop, the panelists will deal with all your burning questions about why Big Tech attracts so much attention from antitrust enforcers around the globe.
