CIRB Consultations with CBA on Virtual Proceedings

The move to remote working and virtual hearings was made necessary by the onset of the global pandemic. The Canada Industrial Relations Board is no exception. We shifted very quickly to virtual operations and transitioned to videoconference as the principal method of conducting mediations and oral hearings.
The February 2021 CBA Task Force report on justice issues arising from COVID left the readers with two main themes:
First, there is no turning back. We must continue to build upon the innovations implemented during the pandemic.
Second, new measures and technological tools must be deployed in a way that enhances the parties’ ability to participate in the process and we must be mindful of their adverse and unintended consequences.
As the Board thinks about how best to incorporate virtual hearings in its service delivery model going forward, we want to hear from you. At consultation sessions led by CIRB Chairperson Ginette Brazeau, we will discuss:
- the benefits of virtual hearings for parties appearing before labour boards
- the lessons learned or the prerequisites to effective virtual hearings
- the type of proceedings best suited for virtual hearings
Ultimately, the Board wants to ensure it remains accessible, relevant and efficient in the dispute resolution services it offers. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on how best to achieve this objective.
