ABOUT THE SPEAKER(S)

The Hon. Chief Justice Ronald A. Skolrood, Supreme Court of BC

The Honourable Ronald A. Skolrood was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia on October 15, 2024. Prior to his appointment, Chief Justice Skolrood was a justice of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia from 2022 to 2024 and a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia from 2013 to 2022.

Chief Justice Skolrood earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1983 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Victoria in 1986. He clerked for the Honourable Mr. Justice William McIntyre of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1986-87 then completed a Master of Laws degree at the University of Cambridge in 1989. He was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1988 and to the Bar of the Northwest Territories in 2010. He was appointed King’s Counsel in 2012.

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Skolrood practiced with the law firm of Lawson Lundell LLP in Vancouver since 1987. His main areas of practice were civil, commercial and administrative litigation

The Hon. Justice Nitya Iyer, Court of Appeal for BC

Justice Nitya Iyer was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 2017. She attended the University of Toronto and earned a B.A. in 1983 and a LL.B. in 1986. She also earned a graduate degree at Harvard University in 1989. She was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1994. 

Justice Iyer started her legal career as a law professor, teaching constitutional law, administrative law, and family law at the University of Toronto and then at the University of British Columbia. She left teaching to become a member of the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal and went on to private practice with Lovett Westmacott. She has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia and the Supreme Court of Canada. She was appointed King's Counsel in 2016.

The Hon. Justice Neena Sharma, Supreme Court of BC

The Honourable Neena Sharma, a lawyer with the Ministry of Justice in Vancouver, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia to replace Madam Justice W.G. Baker, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of April 22, 2013.

Madam Justice Sharma received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria in 1990 and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1992. She was legal counsel with the British Columbia Ministry of Justice, Legal Services Branch, from 1995.  Prior to that, she acted as agent of the Attorney General of Canada and was an associate with Alexander Holburn Beaudoin & Lang. She also served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada and, later, to Mr. Justice William Stevenson. Her main area of practice was civil litigation with a focus on constitutional and administrative law and, more recently, labour relations.

Madam Justice Sharma served as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. She has been a frequent speaker at the British Columbia Continuing Legal Education conferences.

Christopher Doll, KC. Partner at North Shore Law

Christopher Doll represents clients in all levels of court and less formal proceedings such as arbitration and mediation. Serious personal injury, contractual, and insurance claims have been the focus of Chris’s practice since he joined North Shore Law in 1990. He also assists the firm’s corporate clients in the resolution of issues involving the governance of corporations and non-profit societies.

Chris was awarded “King’s Counsel” in 2015.

Since moving to North Vancouver, Chris has served on the board of numerous community and business organizations, including the Lower Lonsdale Business Association (President, 1995-1999), the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce (Board Chair, 2009-2010), and Capilano University (Vice-Chair, 2017-2018). In recognition of his work, Chris received a Canadian Bar Association Award for Community Service. In 1990, Chris helped to establish a branch of the international humanitarian aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders in Canada. Chris served many years on the Board of Directors and as an Officer and he is proud to remain a member of that organization.

Amy Nathanson, Partner, Lawson Lundell LLP

Amy is a litigator practicing civil and commercial litigation. She acts for clients in complex business and commercial disputes in a broad range of industries.  Her practice areas include pension and benefits disputes, commercial disputes, class actions, product liability, insurance litigation, construction disputes. 

Amy has appeared as counsel in all levels of court in British Columbia. She also resolves matters using alternative dispute resolution, including mediation. 

Amy is a contributor to Lawson Lundell’s Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Blog, a resource that examines current trends and interesting issues in the legal and business community.
