Synopsis
One of the most challenging aspects of workplace investigations can be dealing with individuals with high conflict personalities. Cherolyn Knapp and Jason Walker discuss practical insights and strategies for navigating the interpersonal, legal and ethical implications of dealing with high conflict personalities in workplace investigations.
Topics include recognizing high conflict behaviour and its potential impact on the investigation; employing effective communication techniques to de-escalate difficult dynamics setting clear boundaries to protect yourself and the integrity of the investigation; and engaging in self-care to manage stress and preserve wellbeing.
About the Speakers
Cherolyn Knapp B.Comm, LL.B, Q.Med (she/her) is a conflict resolution consultant, mediator, trainer, conflict coach, workplace investigator and lawyer based in Victoria, BC. From 2004 to 2019, Cherolyn advised and advocated for employee and employer clients in a broad range of employment, human rights and civil disputes, appearing before various levels of Court and Tribunals and negotiating numerous out of court resolutions. She was also the co-managing partner of a successful law firm.
Since 2019, she has conducted numerous workplace investigations into allegations of bullying, harassment, discrimination and misconduct, as well as workplace assessments, in various public, private and non-profit sector unionized and non-union environments. She has also been engaged as a mediator and facilitator to assist co-workers and professionals who are locked in disputes to find a path forward. She is also a trainer and coach with the High Conflict Institute.
Jason Walker is an associate professor and program director overseeing graduate studies in industrial-organizational and applied health psychology at Adler University in Vancouver, Canada. With dual doctorates in general and clinical psychology and over 20 years of expertise in mental health and organizational psychology, his areas of expertise are workplace violence, bullying, harassment, and mental health. Dr. Walker’s research on trauma-informed practices and work-life dynamics has been published in leading journals, and, most recently, he was named a contributing writer with Forbes. In addition, he serves as an adjunct clinical professor at the City University of Seattle. Combining academic rigor with practical experience, he addresses complex workplace challenges and advances organizational health and safety through practical, actionable strategies.
