Synopsis
Legal professionals are increasingly called upon to manage the needs of the older population they serve. It is important for lawyers to be familiar with the best practices and special considerations when dealing with an older client. Kelly Melnyk, Marie Ong and Phil Riddell, KC, provide an overview of the complexities older adults face at each stage of a criminal matter, insights into supporting vulnerable victims and witnesses, and strategies and sentencing considerations for a defense lawyer's toolkit.
About the Speakers
Kelly Melnyk works for the British Columbia Prosecutions as Crown Counsel. Kelly also teaches Elder Law and Wills and Estates at Thompson Rivers University. Kelly has focused much of her career on examining issues of capacity, advance planning in the legal context, and legal decision-making.
Marie Ong is a staff lawyer at the British Columbia Law Institute (BCLI). Prior to joining BCLI, Marie worked as an associate at a Vancouver-based national firm where she specialized in class actions, medical negligence, occupiers’ liability, and personal injury claims.
Phil Riddell K.C.'s criminal law practices spans two decades and principally involves the defense of individuals charged with criminal and regulatory offences. The range of cases defended range from murder, sexual assault, possession and trafficking of controlled substances, weapons offences, and all variety of driving offences including defenses in fatalities and serious injury.
