Synopsis
Child protection proceedings frequently result in a child’s ties with their families and their communities being irrevocably severed. Often, a parent’s inability to properly care for their child stems from generational discrimination, poverty, homelessness and addiction. Child protection proceedings can have severe short and long term impacts on child wellbeing.
International principles regarding a child’s rights when they interface with child welfare authorities have been incorporated into domestic child protection law. Michael Zimmerman and Danica Vance Grimard of Lindsay Kenney discuss the rights of children involved in the child protection system in British Columbia.
