SYNOPSIS
This webinar is a part 1 of the CBABC Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Series.
Lawyers with disabilities are no strangers to overcoming personal and professional barriers. The legal profession has made important efforts to improve access, challenge discriminatory practices and educate practitioners about the ability for lawyers with disabilities to succeed in this profession. But more can be done to help legal employers and law firms include lawyers with disabilities and pave the way for a more diverse legal team and client service model.
Our speakers shared their experience, insights and best practices to shed light on:
- The barriers that continue to pervade the practice of law for lawyers with disabilities.
- How including lawyers with disabilities fosters collaboration within the firm and boosts creativity for your client services.
- What you can do to create an inclusive disability strategy for your firm.

About Carrie Moffat
Carrie Moffatt is an Assistant City Solicitor at the City of Victoria, where she advises the City in all areas of municipal law. Prior to joining the City, Carrie articled and practiced at a local government law firm in Vancouver. She has represented municipalities at the BC Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, BC Utilities Commission, Canada Energy Regulator and Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
Carrie has a condition called Usher Syndrome, which is a leading cause of deafblindness and results in hearing loss combined with progressive vision loss. She has had moderate/severe hearing loss since birth and relies on hearing aids. Carrie lost most of her vision in her twenties and entered law school legally blind.
Carrie is a member of the CBABC’s EDI and municipal law section executive committees. She has previously volunteered with guide dog handlers to work on issues related to BC guide dog legislation. She also brought a case before the Canadian Transportation Agency (with the representation of CLAS) to successfully challenge Air Canada’s policy towards deafblind passengers which presumed that a deafblind person could not travel independently without an able-bodied assistant.
