SYNOPSIS

This webinar is a part 3 of the CBABC Career Starter Series.

Becoming a partner at a law firm is an exciting prospect for some associates. Others may be undecided on whether making partner is right for them. This session uncovers what it means to become a partner in various firm settings. How have successful lawyers made the decision for themselves? What are the benefits and drawbacks of partnership? What are some different partnership models? And, if a lawyer wants to become a partner, what can they do to achieve this goal?

By the end of this session, you will know:

  1. How to thoughtfully consider whether partnership is right for you.
  2. How to identify and navigate the different partnership models and structures to choose from.

About Erin Roth

Edelmann is a boutique immigration and refugee law firm of six lawyers, with a team of 17 full-time staff. She became a partner at Edelmann in 2018. Prior to joining Edelmann in 2016, Erin was a Litigation Manager at another boutique firm in Toronto.

In addition to her practice, Erin is an active volunteer with Access ProBono, attending their (virtual) clinic at ISS of BC, acts as duty counsel for Legal Aid British Columbia, and was also the CBA Immigration Co-Litigation Coordinator (2020-2022) and CBA Immigration Section representative to the Federal Courts Bench and Bar Liaison Committee (2017-2022).

About Kelly Simington
Kelly practices family law (almost) exclusively. Although she prefers to resolve matters outside of court as much as possible, much of Kelly’s work has involved high-conflict litigation addressing allegations of family violence and parental alienation, and complex financial matters. Kelly has represented clients at all levels of court in British Columbia and is currently awaiting judgment on an application (by opposing counsel) for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Kelly began her legal career as an articled student at North Shore Law LLP in 2013, and became a partner in January 2022. She has co-authored papers on family law for the TLABC and, along with other lawyers at North Shore Law LLP, provides pro bono legal advice to women on the North Shore through the North Shore Women’s Centre family law legal clinic.

In her free time Kelly enjoys hiking in the North Shore mountains and very casual softball.
