Malpractice in the Practice of Immigration Law: Insights from a Professional Negligence Lawyer
Presented by the CBA Alberta Immigration Law North Section
On Demand. Originally presented on September 19, 2024.
As a civil litigator based in Vancouver, the presenter has built a niche practice focused on negligence claims against immigration lawyers/ consultants. Apart from providing an overview of the substantive requirements to establish a claim of negligence, the presenter will also offer examples of common errors by immigration practitioners that may give rise to liability. Additionally, he will share insights into the practicalities and real-life outcomes in terms of obtaining meaningful remedies for clients impacted by a negligent handling of their immigration applications. As lawyers, the attendees of this session will benefit from learning (or being reminded) about their professional standard of care and how to exercise appropriate prudence, diligence, and ethics when handling immigration matters.
