Presented by the CBA Alberta Health Law South Section
On Demand. Originally presented on January 11, 2024, 2023.
Professor Lorian Hardcastle of the University of Calgary Faculty of Law will be presenting her research from an empirical study that reviews all reported disciplinary decisions against physicians in Canada over a 15-year period. This study looks at variables such as physician specialty, the sanction imposed, the nature of the behaviour being complained of, the physicians' years of practice, recidivism, and country of graduation, among other things. Professor Hardcastle will discuss the policy recommendations for professional regulators emerging from this study, in particular with respect to reactive disciplinary activities and proactive oversight activities.
