Criminal Practice in the World of Generative AI

Presented by the CBA Alberta Criminal Justice North Section

On Demand. Originally presented on March 19, 2024.

This session will provide an introduction and exploration into the uses of Generative AI in the context of a criminal legal practice. In the last few years, programs like ChatGPT and other similar large-language models have entered the public discourse, particularly in the legal field. Lawyers should be aware of the implications of this technology for their own practices. These programs force us to confront some big picture questions about the future of legal practice. Chris Samuel is the Director of Legal Research and Writing at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. He formerly articled at the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench (as it then was) and worked as a prosecutor for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, where he maintained both an appellate and trial practice.
