Summary and Discussion on the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act

The recently implemented Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act, came into force on January 1, 2023. In an attempt to stabilize domestic pricing and access to housing, the Act prohibits the purchasing of residential real estate by non-residents, directly or indirectly, for a two-year period beginning January 1, 2023. Sharon Ohayon has been closely following this legislation and will provide a summary and engage in a discussion about all aspects of this new piece of legislation, including what types of properties are affected; who is deemed a "non-Canadian"; grandfathering; offences and penalties; among other topics.
