Income Tax Changes Affecting Charitable Gifts, Including Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities, Starting in 2024

Presented by the CBA Charities Law Alberta Section

On Demand. Originally presented on September 11, 2023.

Whether you are an advisor to a charity, a board member, or another volunteer with a charity, it is important to be aware of changes that impact the ability of charities to raise the funds needed to operate. Changes to the Alternative Minimum Tax regime directly impact the taxation of gifts, including gifts of publicly traded shares and mutual funds, by reducing the incentive for some (but not all) of these gifts and adding a level of complexity. How worried should charities be? And this year we are also planning to have a time for participants to raise other questions and issues for discussion at each of the Charity section meetings.
