THE CANADIAN BAR ASSOCIATION Alberta
& THE EDMONTON BAR ASSOCIATION
ARE PLEASED TO HOST THE 39TH INNS OF COURT
The Inns of Court is an evening of informal discussion and of "dining out" on topics of interest to junior barristers, and follows the English tradition of dining with senior practitioners and judges. This event will give Young Lawyers the opportunity to hear presentations by distinguished speakers on topics that are most important to those in the early years of practice. Attendees will be given the opportunity to dine with a member of the judiciary or bar having casual conversations, asking questions, as well as be regaled with their stories.

"Legal Research and Writing: The often disregarded and increasingly important keys to successful advocacy"
The evening will focus on legal research and effective written advocacy in a post-pandemic world. While oral advocacy and rhetoric in the courtroom have historically been, and remain, important skills for barristers, the up-front effort in legal research and in written submissions in chambers and at trial are fundamental to framing your client’s position and in the artful persuasion of both the court and of other counsel. The importance of written materials has become even more evident in the last few years given the sudden rise of virtual advocacy and the proliferation of electronic materials. Our speakers from the Bench and the Bar will reflect on the importance and impact of well-researched written materials in litigation and give practical tips to young lawyers on making pleadings, affidavits and written argument essential parts of their overall advocacy.
