Muslim Lawyers in Alberta Panel Discussion

Originally presented on May 10, 2022. This 1.5 hour panel discussion is presented in partnership between the new Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Muslim Lawyers' Association and the CBA Alberta Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Join panelists Sania Chaudhry, Ilyas Gora, Hannan Mohamud and Iqra Nazir for a candid discussion about their lived experience as Muslim lawyers in Alberta, Islamophobia, barriers to equity for Muslim lawyers and ways to overcome them, and recommendations for systemic change. Time permitting, there will be a Q&A session with attendees near the end of the event.


Sania Chaudhry is Conduct Counsel at the Real Estate Council of Alberta and a part-time student at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in the Masters of Law Program, with her research focusing on critical race theory and administrative law in the context of reasonable apprehension of bias. Sania is also the past chair of the CBA Alberta Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee, current member of the CBA Alberta Board of Directors, and founding board member of the Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Association of Muslim Lawyers. 

Ilyas Gora is an associate at Torys LLP where his practice focuses on corporate law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, securities, and corporate governance matters. Outside the office, Ilyas is passionate about community building and bringing people together. He has founded a number of grassroots initiatives to encourage civic engagement, especially amongst young people and in Calgary's diverse Muslim community. He is currently the Vice Chair of the CMLA Alberta Chapter and is a member of the CBA Alberta Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

Hannan Mohamud is a 2L law student at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law Common Law Section. As an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta in 2019, Hannan studied a dial B.A. in Psychology and Sociology; her research explored the importance of understanding the impacts of historical and contemporary oppression and trauma on policy development and decision-making. She is a member of the University of Ottawa's board of governance, a member of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women board of directors and a member of the Riseup Advisory Committee for the Kids Help Line.

Iqra Nazir received her J.D. in 2021, and is currently articling with an Edmonton law firm specializing in immigration law and personal injury. Iqra is dedicated to client and community service and her volunteer work has spanned a variety of organizations and causes including autism awareness, efficient healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations in Alberta and access to justice. Prior to law school, Iqra obtained a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in supply chain management.
