Advancing Abortion Access in Canada in 2025: Opportunities for Law Reform and Advocacy
In 2024, the WLF successfully sponsored a resolution on Abortion Rights in Canada (Resolution 24-09-A), which commits the CBA to "oppose any efforts to restrict abortion rights and access in Canada, and commit to working with governments and other stakeholders to expand abortion access across Canada." Building on Resolution 24-09-A, the WLF is hosting this national webinar on advancing abortion access in Canada.
This is an especially timely topic in light of increased abortion restrictions and bans in the United States, and given the likelihood that abortion will be an issue in Canada's next federal election (expected in Spring 2025). Even as abortion makes headlines, the Canadian legal framework is often misunderstood, and opportunities for law reform can be missed. This webinar will review the current state of Canadian law on abortion access, and clear up common misconceptions. As two areas for potential law reform and advocacy, the webinar will focus on ways to enhance access to abortion pills through the regulatory regime for prescription drugs, and by expanding the scope of eligible abortion providers and prescribers.
